The childhood vaccine schedule includes 15 different immunizations (shots or drops). Some vaccines protect against more than one disease. Some require more than one dose. Pediatricians can use combination vaccines to decrease the number of shots your child gets at a single appointment. The timing for each dose of a vaccine is based on what age a child’s immune system provides the best protection after vaccine, and the earliest possible time to provide protection balanced with the age the child is at highest risk for a disease.
The purpose of vaccines is to teach the body to protect itself against specific disease without taking the risk of an infection. Most vaccines happen early in life so kids can get the protection when they are most vulnerable. For this reason, children receive many vaccinations during infancy. Before a vaccine can be added to the immunization schedule, it must be licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Vaccine safety is considered at every point of vaccine development and evidence of safety is continuously gathered for as long as a vaccine is in use. The current vaccine schedule has been tested and approved by the FDA and recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
Vaccines have been considered one of the medical miracles of the 21st century and takes credit for saving millions of lives. When everyone is vaccinated, diseases have a hard time spreading. It helps keep you and your child healthy while also protecting others in the community who cannot get vaccinated. Thanks to advances in medical science, your child can avoid disease complications that cause serious illness or death.
